Description

Historic Des Moines City Hall, located at 400 Robert D. Ray Drive, is under renovation. The construction is necessary to install modern heating, cooling, and sprinkler systems while preserving the historic character of the building. The project is expected to take 12 to 18 months. During the renovation, City Hall is closed to the public and City offices have moved to other nearby locations.

City Hall Construction Update June 16, 2017
June 16, 2017

In addition to the interior improvements, the exterior stone masonry is being repaired.  TNT Tuckpointing has been repairing, patching, and repointing mortar joints of the limestone.  See photo. Cleaning of the stone will follow in the Fall.

Inside the building demolition has started on the additional interior improvements approved by Council on May 8.

With the major components and infrastructure of the mechanical, electrical, and fire suppression systems nearing completion, construction is starting to focus on interior finishes.    Click here to see the progress.

Installation of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing equipment is ongoing with the majority of the work in the basement, first floor, and shafts that run from the basement to the attics.

Demolition of existing walls and ceilings has uncovered deteriorated conditions such as pipes, which will be replaced while they are accessible.
